Joining a Mission
1. Who can join a Gebirah mission? Anyone who sincerely wants to serve is welcome to enquire about joining a Gebirah mission. You do not need to be a professional volunteer or have previous mission experience. What matters most is a willingness to serve, learn, work with others and respect the communities we accompany.
2. Is there an age requirement? Participants should generally be at least 16 years old to join without a parent or guardian. Younger participants may be considered when accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is no fixed upper age limit. However, missioners should be sufficiently independent and physically able to participate in the activities of the particular mission.
3. Do I need previous volunteer or mission experience? No. Many Gebirah missioners are joining a humanitarian mission for the first time. Guidance and preparation are provided before the trip.
4. Do I need special skills or qualifications? Usually not. Many activities require no special qualifications — only a heart of compassion and hands willing to serve. Some activities, such as medical or specialised professional services, may require appropriate qualifications.
5. Can I choose what I would like to help with? Yes. Before the mission, we normally share the proposed activities and invite missioners to volunteer for areas they are interested in supporting. We encourage everyone to participate actively rather than simply observe.
6. Can I propose an activity that is not already planned? Absolutely. If you have an idea, ability or area of interest that could benefit the community, we welcome your suggestions. We will discuss it with our local partners to determine whether it is appropriate and useful.

Faith & Our Approach to Mission
7. Do I have to be Catholic to join? No. Gebirah is a Catholic humanitarian organisation, and our missions are rooted in the Catholic faith. However, people of other faiths or no particular faith are welcome if they are comfortable participating respectfully in a Catholic mission environment. Prayer, Mass or other spiritual activities may form part of the mission programme.
8. What makes a Gebirah mission different from an ordinary volunteer trip? A Gebirah mission is not simply about travelling somewhere and completing a series of activities. We try to listen first, understand the needs of the local community and work alongside trusted local partners. Our aim is not to arrive as people who have all the answers, but to accompany communities, contribute what we can and build relationships that may continue beyond the mission. That reflects Gebirah’s wider approach of going as companions rather than benefactors.
9. Are Gebirah missions mainly about helping people or evangelisation? Our faith motivates our service, but assistance is not conditional upon anyone accepting our faith. We seek to serve people with dignity and compassion regardless of their background. For us, mission means putting faith into action through love, service, accompaniment and respect.
10. Will there be Mass, prayer or pilgrimage during the mission? Often, yes. Depending on the destination and circumstances, a mission may include Mass, prayer, reflection, visits to churches or a pilgrimage. Some Gebirah missions also conclude with a Marian pilgrimage or an opportunity to offer prayer intentions for people back home and those we meet during the mission.
11. What is expected of me as a missioner? Come prepared to participate. We ask missioners to approach the experience with humility, compassion, flexibility, teamwork and respect for local culture. Mission sometimes means adapting when circumstances change, doing simple tasks and helping where help is actually needed rather than only where we originally hoped to serve.
Mission Activities
12. What kinds of activities might I be involved in? Activities depend entirely on the community and local partner. They may include: education and children's activities health and dignity programmes programmes for women and families livelihood and skills initiatives community outreach visits to the sick, elderly or marginalised distribution of essential items sports, music or recreational programmes photography and videography logistics and administration pilgrimage and cultural activities Some missions combine several of these.
13. Does every Gebirah mission have the same programme? No. Every community is different. Gebirah works with local partners to identify what would actually be useful. The programme may also be adjusted according to the number of missioners and the skills and interests they bring.
14. Who decides what assistance the community needs? Wherever possible, we work with local churches, religious communities and trusted organisations that already know the people and their circumstances. They help us understand what is genuinely needed so that our activities complement local efforts rather than duplicate or disrupt them.
Costs & Financial Assistance
15. How much does a Gebirah mission cost? The mission fee varies according to destination, duration, accommodation, meals, local transportation and programme requirements. The fee will be stated clearly for each mission.
16. What does the mission fee usually cover? Depending on the particular mission, the fee may include: accommodation meals during the official programme local transportation programme materials mission activities orientation and administration The exact inclusions will be stated in the individual mission information.
17. What is usually not included? Unless otherwise specified, missioners should normally expect to arrange or pay separately for items such as: international airfare travel insurance visas where required vaccinations personal expenses optional activities personal travel before or after the mission
18. What if I would like to join but cannot afford the full cost? Please speak with us. Depending on the mission and available arrangements, there may be opportunities to seek sponsorship or other financial assistance. Gebirah also encourages people who are unable to travel themselves to consider sponsoring someone who is willing to serve but may not otherwise be able to afford the mission.
Flights, Accommodation & Travel
19. Do I book my own flight? Usually, missioners will receive guidance on recommended flights or the required arrival and departure times. Depending on the mission, participants may book their own flights or coordinate travel with the group. Please wait for the mission instructions before purchasing non-refundable tickets.
20. Can I arrive earlier or stay longer after the mission? Usually yes, subject to immigration requirements and the particular destination. However, personal travel outside the official mission period is normally your own responsibility, including accommodation, transport, insurance and related costs.
21. What kind of accommodation should I expect? Accommodation varies considerably between destinations. It may include religious houses, retreat centres, guesthouses, hotels, hostels or other suitable accommodation arranged for the group. Missioners should be prepared for relatively simple accommodation in some locations.
22. Will meals be provided? Meals during the official mission programme are generally provided where they are included in the mission fee. Specific arrangements will be explained before departure. If you have important dietary requirements or allergies, please let us know as early as possible.
Packing & Preparation
23. What should I pack? Gebirah has a general Packing List, and individual missions may provide additional destination-specific recommendations. Because we travel to very different environments, no single packing list can cover every situation. Missioners should use reasonable discretion based on their personal needs and the local climate. [View Packing List →] https://www.gebirah.org/packing-list
24. What should I wear during a mission? Clothing should be practical, modest and culturally respectful. Missioners should also bring suitable clothing for churches or religious sites where shoulders or knees may need to be covered. You generally do not need to purchase expensive specialist clothing unless the activities specifically require it. [View Mission Clothing Guide →] https://www.gebirah.org/mission-clothing
Health & Safety
25. How physically demanding are Gebirah missions? It depends on the destination. Some missions may involve heat, walking, stairs, uneven ground, long days or travelling between several locations. Others may be comparatively gentle. We will try to explain any significant physical requirements before you register.
26. What if I have a medical condition? Please tell the Mission Lead about any medical condition that could affect your participation or require assistance during the mission. This allows us to assess whether the programme is suitable and to make reasonable preparations where possible. Missioners should also carry sufficient personal medication for the trip.
27. Do I need vaccinations and travel insurance? Vaccination recommendations depend on the destination and your individual circumstances. Missioners should seek appropriate medical advice before travelling. Appropriate travel and medical insurance should also be obtained for the mission unless specific arrangements have been made for your group.
28. How does Gebirah manage safety? We work closely with trusted local partners who understand conditions on the ground. Missioners may also receive safety and administrative instructions before departure, including matters such as travel insurance, emergency contacts and consular registration where relevant. If circumstances materially change, Gebirah may modify, postpone or cancel activities where necessary.
During & After the Mission
29. Can I take photographs or post about the people we serve? Yes, but always with sensitivity. Missioners should respect the dignity, privacy and wishes of the people we accompany. Photographs should not portray vulnerable people merely as objects of pity, and permission should be obtained where appropriate — particularly when photographing children or people in sensitive circumstances. Our stories should communicate dignity, relationship and hope rather than simply hardship.
30. What happens after the mission? The mission does not end when we fly home. Gebirah seeks to maintain relationships with the communities and partners we serve and uplift them to independence. Missioners may continue contributing through future missions, remote support, fundraising, mentoring, programme development or other Gebirah initiatives. Returning missioners can also help new missioners prepare for future trips.
