Spiritual Preparation

One of our custom in Gebirah is that within 8 days before each mission, we do the following:

  • Daily Mass

  • Daily prayer for the mission, missioners and our Friends in Need (including the Rosary and Angelus)

  • Confession

  • Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father and Cardinal.

This helps prepare ourselves spiritually which is critical to having a meaningful mission.

Plenary Indulgence During the 2025 Jubilee

In addition, this year being the year of the Jubilee, the Vatican had issued a decree outlining ways that Catholics can obtain two plenary indulgences a day, which includes making pilgrimages and practicing works of mercy by helping those who are in need like this Mission.

A plenary indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church through the merits of Jesus Christ to remove the temporal punishment due to sin.

To obtain an indulgence, the usual conditions of detachment from all sin, sacramental confession, holy Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the pope must be met, which, coincidentally falls within Gebirah's custom for spiritual preparation.

We highly encourage you to aim for this as our Mission trip sets you up nicely for it.

Prayer Assignments

You may also be each assigned a prayer to lead the group each day during our mission. The purpose is to keep us all on track spiritually and to always have the presence of God in our minds as we serve this community. An e-prayer card will be shared to help you recite the prayers.

So please remember to bring your rosary. If you don't have one, let your Mission Lead know.

Petitions

Another one of the customs we have in Gebirah Missions is to invite family and friends to submit petitions to Mother Mary during our pilgrimage. On the fourth day of our Hong Kong mission,we will also make a special pilgrimage to Yim Tin Tsai in Sai Kung, once home to St. Joseph Freinademetz, the first SVD missionary to China.

Though born in Southern Tyrol, which at the time belonged to the
Austrian-Hungarian Empire, St. Joseph made Hong Kong his base of mission.

On Yim Tin Tsai, he lived among the villagers, learned their language and
culture, and served them with humility and love. He is remembered for his deep
conviction that “The language that all people understand is that of love.”

Walking in his footsteps on Yim Tin Tsai is more than visiting a historic site—
it is entering into the missionary heart of the Church, where faith and service
meet the struggles of daily life.

This small island, with its chapel dedicated to St. Joseph and its restored
village, is now a UNESCO-recognized cultural site. For us, it is also holy ground,
where missionaries once carried the Gospel to distant shores and where we
renew our own missionary call.

On the final day, we will also gather at the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception on Hong Kong Island. There, before Our Lady, we will entrust our
friends in Hong Kong, our mission, and all the petitions we bring from home for
Our Mother’s intercession.

If someone you know would like to seek her intercession—for healing,
reconciliation, financial difficulties, or any other intention—you can invite them to
write their petition to Mother Mary, seal it in an envelope, and we’ll bring it with
us.

At the shrine, we will prayerfully offer these sealed petitions before Our Lady.
Afterward, we will burn the envelopes ensuring your petitions remain private, if
there is no box to place it in at the Shrine.

If you have any quesions or need any help, please do not hesitate to ask your
Mission Lead.
